Best New Restaurants of 2016, and two San Francisco restaurants — Petit Crenn and The Perennial — made the cut. Los Angeles also fared well — continuing its post-Beard Awards hot streak — with three restaurants on the list (see full list below).
GQ’s Brett Martin has announced his picks for the magazine’s As for Petit Crenn, Dominque Crenn’s Hayes Valley more casual follow-up to multi-Michelin-starred Atelier Crenn, Martin had this to say: “Crenn, in its petit form, strips the tasting menu of its overbearing gravitas and allows you to experience instead the pleasure of being in a chef’s hands.”
Over at the Perennial, Anthony Myint and Karen Leibowitz’s environmentally conscious SoMa restaurant, Martin seemed to have some quibbles with the concept, stating that it “could have been hatched in the Portlandia writers’ room” but ultimately the food won him over. In particular, he loved the Kernza bread, which he described as “delicious enough to make you forget it’s carbon-negative.”
